En los últimos años los niveles de estrés se han disparado muchísimo, las personas sienten cada vez más presión y el efecto en la salud es mayor. Y uno de los mayores contribuyentes a ese estrés es el hábito de pensar demasiado.
¿Has sentido la incertidumbre de qué depara el futuro? o ¿te arrepientes de como manejaste alguna situación del pasado? No importa cual sea la razón, todos hemos caído en el hábito de pensar en exceso acerca de algún acontecimiento o situación particular. Es natural considerar diferentes puntos de vista y pensar detenidamente, por ejemplo, antes de tomar una decisión (en especial si se trata de algo importante), pero es extremadamente dañino -¡e innecesario!- pensar una y otra vez acerca de lo mismo por demasiado tiempo. Con esto lo único que logras es agregar angustia y nublar tu mente al momento de pensar con claridad.
Cuando caes en ese círculo de pensar demasiado, comienzas a desarrollar pensamientos y patrones negativos. Frases típicas de alguien que está en esta situación son: “seguramente lo que dije en la reunión del equipo la semana pasada fue tonto y me hace ver como un incompetente” o “en la presentación de mañana con los directivos me va a ir mal y voy a quedar en ridículo”. Pensar demasiado las cosas consume tu energía y lo único que logras es hacerte daño a ti mismo.
Y esto pasa tanto en la vida profesional como personal. Al momento de tomar decisiones o pensar en algo que queremos hacer en nuestras vidas nos saboteamos a nosotros mismos cayendo en ese círculo vicioso de pensar en exceso y terminamos por no avanzar.
El peligro de este mal hábito es que no solo afecta tu desempeño sino tu salud. Te añades preocupaciones que no son necesarias aumentando tus niveles de estrés, afectando tus horas y calidad de sueño, además de un desequilibrio emocional porque empiezas a dudar de ti mismo y sentir que no eres capaz.
Pero la pregunta es ¿cómo atacar y vencer este hábito?
Por mucho tiempo estuve en esa posición, le daba demasiadas vueltas a casi todas las situaciones que afrontaba (especialmente si implicaba tomar una decisión) y en muchas ocasiones terminaba engañándome a mí mismo encontrando -o más bien inventando- excusas para convencerme porque no tenía que hacer algo o castigándome por haber hecho algo pensando que me había equivocado. Pero en el fondo lo que realmente estaba haciendo era desconfiando de mi mismo y mis capacidades.
Con el tiempo logré darme cuenta del patrón que seguía y lo que estaba haciendo y logré superar este hábito. Y hoy quiero compartir contigo algunas prácticas que me ayudaron a superarlo y vencerlo:
- Identifica cuando estas pensando demasiado. El primer paso es darte cuenta que lo estás haciendo, y lo mejor es prestar atención a la dinámica de tus pensamientos. Por ejemplo, darte cuenta si estas preocupándote por algo que no está en tu control.
- Una vez que sepas que lo estás haciendo, reta a tu mente. Todos tenemos pensamientos negativos, pero la clave esta en no dejar que tomen el control. Reconoce cuando estés teniendo un pensamiento negativo y trata de remplazarlo con una nueva una idea. La mayoría de los pensamientos negativos que tenemos son una exageración de nuestra perspectiva.
- Enfócate en resolver en lugar de cuestionar. Si es un problema que tienes que afrontar direcciona tu energía en encontrar la solución en lugar de solo pensar en el problema. Si es una decisión que tienes que tomar, enfócate en entender de manera objetiva los escenarios si la tomas (considerando tanto el aspecto positivo como negativo) en lugar de solo pensar que podría salir mal.
- Vive y disfruta el presente. El pasado no puedes cambiarlo y el futuro es incierto. Date la oportunidad de disfrutar el aquí y el ahora y verás como tendrás más claridad cuando pienses en el futuro.
- Cambia “la estación”. ¿Cuándo una programa no te gusta que haces? ¡Exacto! La vida es igual, mientras más tratas de evitar pensar en algo menos lo logras. ¡Cambia el canal!, busca una actividad que te guste y te distraiga….. quizás hasta la solución consigas sin siquiera estar buscándola.
Lo más importante es que tengas conciencia de ti mismo y sepas identificar cuales son tus propios detonantes. Si logras ese nivel de conciencia donde reconoces lo que haces e identificas cuando lo haces verás que cambiar se hará más sencillo.
¡Y no te desesperes!. Date la oportunidad de poner estos consejos en práctica, mientras más lo practiques más vas a dominar tus pensamientos y vencer ese hábito de pensar en exceso. Y si conoces a alguien que tenga este hábito de pensar demasiado comparte los consejos de hoy para ayudarle a superarlo.
