Así definía la excelencia este gran filósofo, psicólogo, político, científico y profesor…… como que sabía algo acerca de la excelencia ¿no?

Es común el creer que la excelencia es consecuencia únicamente del talento, o que solo aquellos con un gran intelecto son capaces de alcanzarla. Y la verdad es que, aunque ambas importantes, muchas veces la disciplina tiene un peso mayor al talento o a la inteligencia cuando de excelencia se trata. Las personas exitosas comparten una característica que es la que los separa del resto en su camino al éxito: su disciplina. Y es que no siempre el más talentoso es el más exitoso, y eso lo vemos una y otra vez en diferentes ámbitos -deportes, negocios, carreras profesionales-.

¿Disciplina o inteligencia?

¿Has escuchado alguna vez a alguien decir que los japoneses son más inteligentes que los demás? Todos hemos escuchado esa creencia, que son algo así como una raza superior. Pero esto no es más que un mito, una percepción que se deriva de su manera de trabajar.

Tuve la oportunidad de vivir en Japón y compartir con su cultura por 5 meses. Fue una experiencia increíble y un tiempo lleno de aprendizajes y revelaciones. Pero mi mayor aprendizaje -y lo que más me impacto de ellos- fue ver de primera mano el poder de la disciplina y el hábito. Los japoneses son un pueblo devoto a sus tradiciones y viven con una disciplina milenaria. No son ni más inteligentes ni mejores que los demás, sencillamente son extremadamente disciplinados y tienen unos hábitos claros que han aprendido y han ejecutado religiosamente de generación en generación. Y su éxito como nación en el mundo moderno es evidente: si algo es fabricado por alguna marca Japonesa es sinónimo inmediato de calidad.

Alguien que expone el tema de la disciplina de los japoneses de una manera bastante peculiar es Yokoi Kenji. Si no lo has vistobusca su video en YouTube ‘la disciplina tarde o temprano vencerá la inteligencia‘, de verdad te lo recomiendo.

¿Y cómo llegamos a ser disciplinados?

Una de las claves de la disciplina es tener hábitos establecidos. Los hábitos son esas acciones que realizamos de forma repetida y que nos ayudan a hacer las cosas de una manera natural sin necesidad de pensar en ellas.

La gente tiende a relacionar los hábitos con actividades tediosas y obligatorias que no necesariamente nos gusta hacer. Y la verdad es que ahí es donde la mayoría de la gente falla en desarrollar (y sobre todo mantener) hábitos. La gente llega a ser exitosa por los hábitos que desarrolla. Como dice el escritor y autor canadiense Brian Tracy: ‘la gente exitosa es sencillamente gente con hábitos exitosos’.

Por mucho tiempo intenté desarrollar hábitos. Buscaba la manera más sencilla y eficaz para trabajar en ellos y lo único que logré por mucho tiempo fue….. bueno, pues no lograrlo. Empezaba motivado y con unas ganas inmensas, pero al cabo de unos días los dejaba. Ya no sentía esas misma motivación y fallaba en mi intento por mantenerlos. Y luego de tanto intentarlo (y lo sigo haciendo) entendí que desarrollar un hábito no es algo sencillo, pero tampoco es imposible.

Después de años leyendo, investigando e implementando diferentes técnicas pude identificar algunas actitudes que han sido más efectivas al momento de desarrollar mis hábitos y con las que he ayudado a otros a trabajar y desarrollar los suyos. Estas actitudes son, en mi opinión, claves para poder desarrollar cualquier hábito.

Y ahora la pregunta del millón: ¿Cómo desarrollar nuevos hábitos?

Lo primero que tienes que considerar es que, de acuerdo a los expertos, toma alrededor de 21 días formar un nuevo hábito. Pero todos somos distintos, así que no tomes esto como una verdad absoluta y descubre el tiempo que se adapte a ti -aunque un mes suena como un tiempo razonable-.

Pero el solo repetir una acción por varios días no te va a garantizar que la convertirás en un hábito. Y aquí es donde las actitudes entran en juego:

Consigue tu inspiración

Lo primero es que tiene que ser un hábito que te inspire. El resultado que vas a obtener tiene que hacerte sentir ansioso por lograrlo y hacerte sentir bien una vez que lo consigas. Si es algo que te vas a sentir obligado a hacer es muy difícil que lo veas (y lo sientas) como algo para tener en tu día a día.

Siente la pasión por hacerlo

Conéctalo con algo que te apasione. Lo ideal es que el hábito per se te apasione, pero lamentablemente no es así para todos los hábitos. Cuando sea este el caso, busca una actividad que te guste y que la hagas junto al hábito que estás desarrollando, así será más agradable el proceso. Yo tengo una rutina que me encanta: cocinar con mi esposa los domingos. Si, cocinamos todos los domingos para toda la semana y así lo tenemos que hacer durante la semana (además de controlar lo que comemos). Pero lo que en realidad me gusta no es cocinar sino que es un nuestro momento, sin interrupciones, ni teléfonos, ni redes sociales, ni televisión, ¡ella y yo!

Ten un plan

Prepara un plan de cómo vas a implementar tu tiempo para trabajar el hábito y como lo vas a incorporar en tu vida. ¿No has prometido a comienzos de año que vas a hacer más ejercicio, empiezas el año entrenando todos los días y para mediados de febrero ya ni te acuerdas donde está la ropa de deporte? No planificar lo que vas a hacer reduce la probabilidad de que la mantengas en el tiempo.

Consistencia

Tienes que ser consistente. Una vez que tienes tu plan, debes seguir y mantener las acciones y actividades que estableciste si quieres desarrollar ese nuevo hábito.

Se paciente

La paciencia es tu amiga inseparable al momento de desarrollar hábitos. Van a haber días en que no vas querer hacer nada, que te vas a sentir cansado o sin ánimos. Todos somos humanos. Desarrollar un hábito no es algo que pasa de la noche a la mañana, así que no te desesperes.

Persiste

Es en esos días en que no aparecen las ganas que tienes que empujarte a ti mismo. No se trata de estar animado o motivado todos los días, sino de empujarte a hacerlo cuando no lo estás.

Prémiate

Esta es la parte más importante. Permítete premiarte y celebrar los pequeños logros a medida que vayas trabajando en tu hábito. Cada paso que das es tan importante como el resultado final.

El objetivo final es convertir ese hábito que estás trabajando en una rutina y así pase a formar parte de tu vida cotidiana.

Algo muy importante: los hábitos que te van a ayudar a crecer son los hábitos positivos. Muchas veces tenemos actitudes que hacemos constantemente y que nos afectan de manera negativa. Estos son hábitos negativos que limitan y frenan tu crecimiento. Haz una evaluación de las actitudes y acciones que tienes hoy y trata de identificar cuales están siendo limitantes para ti.
