¿Quieres ser tu mejor versión? Enfócate en tus fortalezas, no en tus debilidades

Uno de los mayores fallos que cometemos al momento buscar ser mejores es enfocar nuestros esfuerzos en mejorar aquellos aspectos en los que no somos buenos. Por años nos hemos esforzados en perseguir la mejora de las fallas, psicólogos han investigado acerca de la tristeza para explicar felicidad, o divorcios para aprender sobre matrimonios felices. Incluso en las escuelas y oficinas, nos enseñan a identificar y corregir nuestras fallas para poder mejorar. Y basado en esta premisa, en la mayoría de los casos los programas de aprendizaje nos impulsan a tratar de convertirnos en alguien que no somos.

EL MENSAJE NO ESTÁ MAL, SOLO MALINTERPRETADO

En el fondo, no es que esa recomendación de enfocarnos en mejorar nuestras debilidades esté equivocada, sino que ha sido mal interpretado por años. Los fallos y errores necesitan atención y estudio, pero le dedicamos mucho más tiempo a nuestras debilidades que a nuestras fortalezas.

¿Cuál es el típico mensaje que recibimos durante las revisiones en nuestros trabajos? Tienes que mejorar en X o Y área porque es donde están tus oportunidades de mejora. O en el colegio, si no eres bueno con los números, ¿qué hacen profesores y padres? Nos forzan a tomar clases extras de matemáticas para buscar mejorar. Los programas de mejora se basan principalmente en atacar nuestras debilidades sin prestar atención en cuáles son nuestras fortalezas.

El problema con está manera de ‘mejorar’, es que invertimos demasiado tiempo en trabajar áreas en las que no somos buenos descuidando aquellas en las que si lo somos. Incluso dejamos de lado nuestros talentos naturales para enfocarnos en donde estamos fallando. Y no quiero decir que no debemos prestar atención en nuestras fallas, porque esa tampoco es la respuesta.

Si hay alguna área con la que realmente estás pasando un mal momento o te está causando problemas y te está frenando en tu crecimiento, sin dudas necesitas trabajarla para mejorarla. Pero si realmente quieres sobresalir en lo que haces, tus fortalezas son las que te van a llevar hasta ahí.

Hay dos aspectos en que las revisiones de las compañías se basan para el desarrollo de sus empleados: una, que las personas pueden llegar a ser competentes en (casi) cualquier área, y la segunda que el crecimiento de una persona está en sus áreas de debilidad. Y está mentalidad hace que la mayoría de las personas no tengan la oportunidad de enfocarse en las cosas que mejor hacen.

¿QUIERES SER GRANDIOSO EN LO QUE HACES? DESARROLLA TUS FORTALEZAS

La mejor manera de mejorar cada día y ser tu mejor versión es trabajar en esas áreas que son tu fuerte. Imagina si Picasso se hubiese dedicado a, no sé, trabajar en su habilidad para la ciencia en lugar del arte; o si Michael Jordan se hubiese dedicado a las matemáticas en lugar del deporte. Los grandes no han llegado a la grandeza enfocándose en las cosas en las que no son buenos, sino en aquellas en las que son realmente buenos y sus talentos naturales trabajando siempre en mejorarlos.

Enfócate y trabaja en mejorar tus fortalezas y las cosas en que eres bueno para alcanzar tu máximo potencial. Si eres una persona creativa debes invertir en siempre mejorar tu creatividad y trabajar en proyectos donde la puedas poner en práctica. Si eres alguien a quien el arte se le da de manera natural, busca la manera de siempre estar en constante mejora de tus habilidades artísticas y trabajar en algo que requiera de esa habilidad. El objetivo es explotar eso en lo que sobresales para poder siempre desempeñarte con tu mayor potencial.

Pero no tomes el extremo. La vida no es blanco y negro nada más. Enfócate en tus fortalezas, pero sin ignorar tus áreas de mejora por completo. Si hay algo que te esté frenando, debes trabajarla. Pero es trabajarla de una manera puntual, hasta que logres mejorarla al punto en que ya no sea un freno; y en ese punto debes seguir trabajando en tus fortalezas. Por ejemplo, si una de tus debilidades es el manejo del tiempo, busca la herramienta que te ayude a mejorarlo, y una vez que hayas encontrado la forma de manejar tu tiempo de manera efectiva sigue trabajando en las áreas en las que eres realmente bueno.

Tomate el tiempo de descubrir cuáles son tus fortalezas y de identificar en que cosas eres bueno o se te dan de manera natural.

Al final del día, si te enfocas en tus debilidades vas a pasar de ser una persona por debajo de lo esperado a alguien bueno…. pero si te enfocas en tus fortalezas vas a pasar de bueno a grandioso. ¿Cuál prefieres?

Está en ti ser la mejor versión que puedes llegar a ser de ti mismo, y esa es la clave del éxito.
